Boarding

A unique feature of Ardvreck is its boarding community which lies at the heart of what the school is all about.

The Headmaster and his family live in the main school building where they share in the daily routine of the full boarding ethos. Alongside the Headmaster's House is the Junior Boarding House where the children sleep in warm attractive dormitories with large well resourced common rooms.

The House itself is run by a Resident Housemistress who lives in the building.  In addition there is a Resident Assistant Housemistress and an outstanding team of dedicated matrons. The junior boarders aged 8-11 are a very special bunch and they all play their part in making the House a vibrant and happy place to live and work in.

All the Junior Boarders transfer over to the two Senior Boarding Houses for their last 2 years at the School. The boys live in MacLellan House whilst the Girls live in Erskine. These purpose built alpine chalets offer a unique preparation for the challenges which await at Senior School. The respective Housemaster and Housemistress not only have a Pastoral Duty of care but also oversee the children’s academic progress through supervised evening Preps as they approach the rigours and demands of the Scholarship and Common Entrance examinations.

The whole school eats centrally in the Main School building (apart from the very popular Senior Houses’ Sunday brunch) and supervised sittings ensure that all are able to enjoy the carefully prepared cuisine which is cooked by the schools’ own in-house team.

Day children and their parents play a vital role in making Ardvreck such a super school to live and work in. They are all assigned a place in one of the Boarding Houses whilst they have their own Housemistress who ensures timely and appropriate communication is maintained with the day families. Many of the day pupils convert to boarding as they progress through the school.

Boarders stay at the school two weekends in three and return home approximately every 20 days for either an exeat or half term. On Saturday there is a full programme of lessons, games and activities.

Sunday morning sees the school (after a well deserved lie – in and a relaxed breakfast) joining the local Crieff Community for worship in the Parish Church whilst on Sunday afternoons there is a full range of activities and outings organized by the on duty staff team who are ably assisted by our four GAP students. A wide game up on the Knock Hill is always a popular Sunday afternoon pastime before supper and a quiet period of preparation for the week that lies ahead.
