LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Leading by Example: Ardvreck Staff Member Inspires Next Generation on the Slopes

The snowy peaks of Klosters, Switzerland, hosted the 17th Amateur Inter-Club Team Championships, where over 270 racers from across the world gathered to compete. The event, which welcomes former professional racers who last competed at least 15 years ago, is a true showcase of skill, resilience, and passion for the sport.

Among those racing was Janine Erdal, a dedicated member of staff at Ardvreck School, who demonstrated first-hand the values of determination, perseverance, and adventure that the school instils in its pupils. Representing the Ladies’ Ski Club (LSC)—a historic organisation committed to supporting and promoting female ski racers— Mrs Erdal made a triumphant return to competitive skiing after a 15-year hiatus.

Competing in the 60+ age category, Mrs Erdal dominated the Giant Slalom, securing 1st place in both runs. In the broader 45–70 age group, the performance was equally impressive, ranking 7th out of 84 racers. The Super Giant Slalom was another thrilling contest, with Mrs Erdal narrowly missing out on 1st place by just a quarter of a second—defeated only by a former Olympic skier from Team USA.

Adding to this success, Mrs Erdal and the Ladies’ Ski Club team raced to Silver in the team event, reinforcing the club’s commitment to excellence and sportsmanship.

Speaking about the experience, Mrs Erdal reflected, “At Ardvreck, we teach our pupils that resilience, courage, and a willingness to challenge oneself are key not just in sport, but in life. Taking part in this competition after so many years away from racing was both daunting and exhilarating, but it proved that the spirit of adventure never fades. I hope this inspires our pupils to embrace every opportunity with confidence—no matter their age.”

With skiing deeply embedded in Ardvreck School’s culture, pupils are encouraged from an early age to embrace the slopes, push their boundaries, and develop a lifelong love for outdoor pursuits. Mrs Erdal’s success is a perfect example of what can be achieved with determination, a competitive spirit, and a willingness to step outside one’s comfort zone—lessons that will undoubtedly resonate with the next generation of Ardvreck skiers.

As the snow settles in Klosters, one thing is certain: age is no barrier to adventure, and at Ardvreck, the spirit of competition and resilience will continue to thrive.
